    photography by Abe Menor

386 South First St: STREET SWAG Photos by Abe Menor.

Abraham Menor is a community organizer/worker and photographer based in San Jose, California. When he is not working as a “at-risk” youth case manager, he is armed with his camera, ready to capture the next fleeting moment. With a background in sociology and a love for photography, Menor realized that he can combine the two together. The result is photography that analyzes and examines human social behavior and society. This exhibition features portraits of festival goers shot on location at the 2nd Annual SubZERO Festival (2009) in his STREET SWAG Photo Booth.

    Skull by Paolo Fachinetti

388 So. First Street: The Skull Series (part of the Timbri Collection) by Paolo Fachinetti (Italy).

The explosion, the division, the breaking of the figure and of the human being is symbolic of the fragility of Man, of our being and not being a part of the cosmos. Man is seen not as something singular, but as made up of many small uncertainties, doubts and anguish. Images from the Timbri (Stamps) series can be recognized as impressionism works.

When observed at a close distance, monochromatic black seems to explode from white. From a farther distance, the image takes shape and acquires an identity, definition. The image isn’t there. The subject is created by the eye of the observer by compensating for what isn’t there.

Join us after Candlelight Yoga (6:15-7:45 pm) as we welcome Art Walk patrons and mingle with new yogi friends and the downtown community. For the month of June, Downtown Yoga Shala is proud to feature watercolor artist Made’ Sukerti Berg.

Made was born and raised in Bali, Indonesia, a place that has captured the imagination of people around the world based upon its beauty and exotic culture. From the time she was a young girl she was involved in the arts. She was a star dancer in her village, and continued to perform and teach dance in the United States for many years. In the early 1990’s she began taking art classes and painting watercolors. It is not surprising that her main subject matter from the outset has been flowers. In Bali flowers are considered holy, and people pray with flowers between their fingers. Made’ is also a serious gardener whose garden and home are filled with flowers.

Made’s background with Bali, the arts, and flowers all come together in this solo show of her watercolors. You see and feel her love and respect for the flowers she paints. The vibrant colors remind one of the tropics. Her perspective evokes the orient and the exotic. Many of the works were actually painted in Bali and others were conceived there. A portion of the proceeds of all sales will be donated to support educational opportunities for underprivileged Balinese children.
