Under the skin of his everyday life in Brazil lies Horoiwa’s Japanese heritage. His paintings portray the spiritually lost and lonely. Through his work, from life-size paintings in São Paulo to the side of a 4 story building in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Horoiwa is able to cope with his want to hide from the world and his need to be a part of it.

Web comics are all the rage these days and SLG presents artwork from one of the most popular webcomics on the internet as artist Ethan Nicolle shows of his work from AXE COP. For the uninitiated Axe Cop is the web comic created by Ethan and his five-year-old brother. Have you ever read something and said to yourself “Was this written by a five year old?” Well, Axe Cop IS written by a five year old and it’s one of the funniest thing on the web. Entertainment Weekly and NPR agree and we are sure you will too.

Also, the Andy Ristaino Escape from Dullsville show continues. Live music by Jazz Trio Quasimodal.

Opening Reception: “Yoga Inspired Art” by Angeles Moreno

Simplicity, harmony, color, and strong outlines define her art, influenced by her life’s work as a graphic designer. Yoga came to her at its own time. It was in discovering consistent yoga practice that revealed a more profound significance and a fresh inspiration for her artwork.

Seeking a deeper understanding of the disciplines at the core yogic principles, Angeles completed the Ashtanga Teacher Training at Mount Madonna, founded 35 years ago by the silent Guru, Baba Hari Dass.

To capture and (re)express the many universal, positive messages from this ancient philosophy, the canvases began to fill with the Spirit of Yoga, compassion – balance – harmony.

Angeles Moreno is a yoga teacher at Downtown Yoga Shala. To see more of Angeles’ work, please join us after Candlelight Yoga (6:15-8pm) as we open our doors to the art patrons and the downtown community for an Artist Reception beginning at 8pm.

Opening Reception: ART OF ZINES 2010 featuring hundreds of zines from basements, bedrooms and midnight copy shops throughout the U.S. and abroad.

We love zines… those little diy, cut-and-paste, copied-on-the-cheap, hand-folded, self-distributed gems that continue to surface because someone, somewhere feels the need to express themselves. It’s that simple. Zines exist and fleurish outside the mainstream with no particular interest whether you’re paying attention or not. According to Chip Rowe, creator of Chip’s Closet Cleaner, “They’re Tinkertoys for malcontents. They’re obsessed with obsession. They’re extraordinary and ordinary. They’re about strangeness but since it’s usually happening somewhere else you’re kind of relieved.”

Featured Zine sellers: Marc Arsenault, John Bobst, Silvia Chenault, Michael Foley, Ben Henderson, Chris Kardambikis, M Undead, Yumiko Miyagawa, Tomas Moniz, Kyle Pellet, Mahoney Perkins, Louis Schmidt, Matthew Seigel, Kate Steward & Meagan Zupanci

[7-9pm] Opening Reception for featured exhibitions by Sandi Billingsley and Mark Damrel with live music by INFM, Tyler Boyd

art by Sandi Billingsley

Transfiguration is a collection of three dimensional art is an expression of Sandi Billingsley’s faith that “we humans can live in luxury while being environmentally responsible.” Transfiguration is essentially the art of changing the properties of an object. In this case it refers to the changing of garbage into art.

This series is made entirely from rescued materials. The core is made of Styrofoam collected from shipping packages, friends and dumpsters. Sandi then applies a combination of old paint clothes, junk mail, phone books — basically anything with natural fibers headed for the trash. Dipping these flexible materials in non-toxic glue gives them strength to hold interesting shapes. Finally, the piece is finished with “Aqua Brand” textures and paint which are non-toxic. The result is an environmentally friendly piece of art.

art by Mark Damrel

Relative Matter is a series of paintings by Mark Damrel inspired by the hardships he encountered on his journey into fatherhood. “Years went by with little to no hope. I started to get used to the fact that I would never have a family, and then it happened.”

In groupings of mixed media paintings on wood and paper he explores the themes of childhood memories, despair, hope and joy.

Every city has a personality that both shapes and is shaped by the people who live there. People reflect the city as they build it. People fade into the city and embody it. The city learns its own nature by watching. The city and the individual enter a collaboration. Five paintings by Kate Stewart tell the city stories about itself.

Opening Reception: All But Purple, paintings by Tamar Belson.

“Despite my love for the red and blue colors, in this series I did not combine them to create the purple color. I used other basic color and their combinations to create a play of contrasts. Warm and cold colors, lines and shapes on colorful surfaces and circles on squares – being some of them. I am always attracted by the powerful interaction between those contrasts and offer the viewer the surprising and vivid fine balanced outcome.” ~Tamar Belson

Every city has a personality that both shapes and is shaped by the people who live there. People reflect the city as they build it. People fade into the city and embody it. The city learns its own nature by watching. The city and the individual enter a collaboration. Five paintings by Kate Stewart tell the city stories about itself.

388 So. First Street: Nature Of The Beast by Tyson Johnston

Strange things go bump in the night…. Oftentimes, dreams are reflections of phobias and dismay that we encounter in our daily lives. Usually, the underlying messages can be extremely cryptic. My aim is to decipher these nightmares into a meaningful message. I use animals and creatures to mirror human emotion, and as symbols. In the end, I hope to use these images and techniques to transfer the negative emotions from my nightmares into a positive release.

Special one night only exhibition and wine tasting event featuring Images From a Beautiful World by LIsa Amato

A collection of fine art photography that pairs well with fine wine, food and music. Having moved to the Bay Area in her early years, Lisa has been “witness to this area’s ability to traverse both the minute wonder of a ladybug resting on a sunflower petal to the overwhelming expanse of a Pacific sunset. Everywhere I go, an opportunity to capture a truly breathtaking moment presents itself; whether it be the rugged peaks of the Sierras, the almost surreal Northern California shore, or the opulent colors of the wine country.”

Live Music by Tyler Boyd.

6pm-8pm: $10 Wine Tasting, $25 Special Pre Fixe Dinner (includes Wine Tasting)

[7-9pm] Artists’ Reception for featured exhibits by Lacey Bryant, Jen Renzel

Fragile Things new paintings and curiosities by Lacey Bryant

Lacey has always been fascinated at how so many fragile things are able to exist in our chaotic, messy world. “Tiny, delicate things often seem to thrive in the most hostile environments. Fragility makes things precious to us, things are more beautiful because they will not last. So many things are fragile when you stop to think about it. Insect wings, shells, glass, children, hearts, dreams, the list is endless. On the surface, vulnerability seems to unite these things but the deeper thing that all of these fragile things have in common is a hidden strength. An egg shell is easily broken, but the shape of an egg is such that it can support a massive amount of weight for it’s size and thickness, protecting it’s delicate contents. An insect may be crushed without a thought but can easily survive a fall that would kill a human being, not to mention the strength of their numbers. Children are amazingly resilient and can survive the most horrible of circumstances. It is the balance between weak and strong and the often contradictory duality of things that interests me. ”

The Carnival of Lost Souls assemblages by Jen Renzel

Little sideshow oddities, dark dreams, and mystical beings. Broken dolls, old toys, antique hardware, collaged images, and imagination are the ingredients for these shadow boxes. “The broken down treasure at the bottom of a moldy box can be the cornerstone of a new creation. In fact, that’s often how the idea for a piece starts — with one broken doll, toy, or image that sparks the imagination> The rest is a continual trial and error process of finding which pieces fit together, then figuring out how to connect them, which can be challenging when working with oftentimes crumbling, frail and damaged materials and parts. Something tells me when a piece is finished. Some pieces come together quickly, and some take forever and are a struggle. In either case, I can lose hours and hours in the workshop, and the results sometimes surprise even me.”

On view in galleryONE: Walking in the White by PJOTA (São Paulo, Brazil)

For his exhibition at Anno Domini, Pjota has created large canvases that are, according to him, “predominantly white” symbolizing his lone journey to California. One might conclude that the nearly miniature entities in his paintings are a result of his feeling “small” when thinking about traveling alone to unfamiliar territory. However, the gritty daily experiences of São Paulo, one of the most populated cities in the world, find their way onto the canvases bringing with them a density of texture, color, grids and hand-lettered scrawl…the canvases can hardly be considered “predominantly white” anymore. As with any environment, be it within a city or a painting, it is rich with discovery should you take the time to explore its depths.

On view in galleryTWO: Exsitu Insitu by Sam3 (Granada, Spain)

Sam3 created a new animation and new canvas works entirely on site at Anno Domini in late August and early September. The 5 minute animation consists of 2136 hand painted frames which were created on the main exhibition walls. The sound and musical score is by Endika of San Jose’s nu class jazz group Panthelion. 12 oversized canvases in Sam’s signature style of “shadows” are also on view.

Opening Reception: Fragments… by Beth Redmond
Things seen and experienced become the fragments that create the kaleidoscope of life. “For me, photography is less a representation of fact than a flight on imagination.” says Redmond. “The big picture is made of many fragments any one of which may capture the attention to become the picture. What we see is determined by how we look and also by how we think. What a photograph shows is determined by the imagination of the photographer.”

	4.) cried about something dumb,
5.) given yourself a bad haircut,
6.) gone to a birthday party of someone you hated,

From the Rubble new paintings by Drew Clark
Drawings on cave walls and old temples have always depicted the end of the world and the collapse of civilization. The Modern Age is no different; visions of recession, biblical apocalypse, climate change and environmental destruction by industry. These new paintings explore the symbolism of the End Times.

Opening Reception: Exsitu Insitu debut solo exhibition by Sam3 (Granada, Spain)

Sam3 is known for creating massive scale silhouettes in urban spaces. He refers to his dramatic black and white works as “shadows.”

The absence of defining details in his paintings allows for him to not only work quickly, but also makes the message more accessible. His seemingly simple style is dense with profundity; the work is a reflection of the human condition as viewed through the experience of his global travels.

Sam started drawing and painting at an early age. His first drawing classes were from a monk at the monastery near his home. When he was 13 he was fascinated with the graffiti culture in his small town and stole spraypaint from local shopkeepers (he was caught by police the first time he went out to write his moniker “BREAK.”) The following years were spent trading photos and zines with other graffiti artists through the mail.

After graduating with a fine arts degree from a Granada university, he worked as waiter, a roadie, an illustrator in Barcelona, and then in animation in Madrid for a year before he “slammed the door on alienation” and abandoned the path of a corporate future. In 2006, Sam made a vow to dedicate his life to his art and has since created murals in 24 cities in 13 countries from Palestine to Brazil leaving metaphorical images that are to be deciphered and “owned” by the community.

Exsitu Insitu is Sam3’s debut solo exhibition inside a gallery. The artwork for this exhibition (on canvas and paper) will be made entirely on site at Anno Domini in the days and nights prior to his September 4th opening.

Currently On View in galleryONE: Anno Domini presents Walking in the White solo exhibition by PJOTA (São Paulo, Brazil)

[7-9pm] Featured Exhibit Artists’ Reception: 89.7 FM KFJC 50th Anniversary Art Show: BLOWING MINDS SINCE 1959

A retrospective of the Art & Culture of KFJC including works from KFJC’s 50th Anniversary Art & Logo Contest and a Silent Auction of DJ art. Since its inception KFJC has challenged the Bay Area’s radio waves. 2009 marks fifty years of operation for KFJC, and naturally we wanted to show our support to our listenership. Our volunteer staff pushed beyond its’ alternative and eclectic programming by hosting a 50th Anniversary Art & Logo Contest this summer.

Every year we hand select different artists to create our Artist T Shirt and Girlie Shirt designs that become our gifts during our fundraiser season. The contest provided an opportunity to connect our listeners with another side of KFJC that they have become familiar with through their support. The contest was open to the public and included three submission categories: mixed media, artist t-shirt, & logo.

We are excited to present the 2009 winners: Andrew Goldfarb, Rosalind Schell and Gordon De Los Santos. These winning art works will be exhibited along side past artist contributions. Previous KFJC themed works from Niagara, Sunny Buick, Arik Roper, Emek, Strk3, Mike King, Webster Colcord, Plastic Crimewave, Mike Zorn, Mike Davis, Frances Marin, Chris Reccardi, Robert Williams, and GAMA-GO! will be featured. KFJC DJs will be participating in a Silent Auction of unique works during the opening night to benefit KFJC.

Opening Reception: Anno Domini presents Walking in the White solo exhibition by PJOTA

Currently residing in São Paulo, Pjota grew up in São José do rio Preto with an early interest in arts and graffiti. ”When I was 13 years old, I would paint the walls with my friends.” Pjota reflects upon that time often as he works, now aware that he was “studying the pictorial features of the streets without realizing it.”

Pjota has had significant exhibitions since he was 18 years old including solo exhibits at Galeria Choque Cultural, Museum of Contemporary Art of Paraná and the Volcom Art Space, all in Brazil. Most recently Pjota’s work was included in the Paperview exhibition at the John Jones Project Space in London which brought together works on paper from three renowned London based art collections: The Zabludowicz Collection, The Lodeveans Collection and The John Jones Contemporary Collection. Walking in the White is Pjota’s debut solo exhibition in the United States.

Music by: Shudder
Shudder employs improvisation, composition, and deep listening in the service of an assertive minimalism, mining the intersection of digital and carbon-based sound. The horns emphasize fractured drones and complex textures highly informed by electronic music, while the computer’s dual role as sound generator and real-time processor creates an interactive, unstable hall of mirrors.

You are invited to come and celebrate the completion of “A Place In Mind”, a large-scale mural in downtown San Jose’s SoFA District by artist José Arenas.

For José, this mural evolved conceptually from the idea of looking back – “growing up in downtown San Jose, I recall many childhood memories that were deeply connected to the places and people around me. In my mind they reflect innocence, hope, and of trying to reconcile a longing for ones past while navigating the present reality.”

José started working on the mural six weeks ago and it was recently completed with the help of two gifted artists, Michael Torchia and Oscar Lopez, and a host of enthusiastic volunteers. José will lead a tour of the mural and light refreshments will be served at the mural site.

Opening reception: San Jose Yacht Club: An Installation by Christopher Reynolds. This exhibition is in conjunction with Space 47’s Mentoring Artist Program (M.A.P.). The San Jose Yacht Club (SJYC) is inspired by acts of camaraderie, tradition, and the ritualistic actions involved in obtaining a right of entry and membership to traditionally exclusive societies. The SJYC introduces a social environment not unlike an exclusive brotherhood by employing acts of initiation, role playing, and mergers, which result in hybrid sculptures, photographs, and paintings of time-honored traditions that investigate rank, identity, and fantasy, while questioning the social impact and relevance of exclusive societies. Welcome to the San Jose Yacht Club.

Join us for the opening reception of ‘Polar Identity’ in which six artists explore the North and South Pole. Global climate change has far reaching ramifications, and as a result the world as we know it will not be the world of 100 or perhaps even 10 years. Armed with awareness of how our actions impact the environment, how will this affect our ideas about who we are? Friday August 7th meet artist Phil Boissonnet with his work “CP/TOMS” and “Total Ozone”. In the Paulette Peterson Gallery see an installation by artist Margo S. Jones.

[7-9pm] Featured Artists’ Reception for TANGLE: wandering off trail by Janett Peace and Matthew Bailey Seigel.

Matthew Bailey Seigel’s new paintings are a reinvention of the Japanese scroll in modern materials. And like their Muromachi era (1336-1537) counterparts, his themes are of local plants, flowers and animals. But unlike traditional kakejiku (hung scrolls), Matthew’s are less formal, and more of a tangled log of his wanderings off trail.

Inspired by Matthew’s view of nature, Janett Peace has created a series of glass pieces in response. She evokes Matthew’s style in 3D while adding a luminous quality only possible with glass. While her interpretations are meant as a tribute to Matthew’s eye for color and composition, she further explores drawing in glass using techniques that give her work a painterly quality.
