Wally Schnalle’s latest project Idiot Fish combines a myriad of influences from his love of jazz and fusion to trends and sounds that emanate from the electronic dance music world. Genres like jungle, glitch, dub-step and IDM all have a hand in influencing the new compositions that fuel this new ensemble. His usual acoustic drum set is augmented by a host of electronic devices that allow him to embellish his usual percussive voice with electronic elements. Even more ground breaking is the fact that he plays much of the harmonic content of these compositions from the drum set as well.

Inspired form early 19th century prints and photographs, Wallace, seeks a period free from the current or mainstream. Figures writhing against their environment, growing and expanding beyond themselves, or breaking down and dissolving into the surrounding space. Portrayed figures are in perpetual jeopardy yet capable of withstanding constant dismemberment, reorganization and reconstitution of their parts. His work strives to uncover the hidden human instinct and the wilder side of human behavior which dwells just below the surface of our everyday façade. His work is in the act of reclaiming images, transferring them transparently as to see the underlying natural wood grain.

Ancestor Art Stone Paintings by C. Buck Reynolds

Before the written word, there was art. We can find meaning in some of the images in paleolithic cave art today—lions stalking prey, galloping horses, sparring bucks—but many other symbols have wide open meaning. Without a Rosetta stone of the ice age we’ll never know what stories the artists were telling. I try to commune with our pre-literate ancestors and assemble the animals and symbology that were so important to them in fresh ways. Some of my paintings are new compositions based on cave art, others attempt to make deteriorating images from actual caves in France and Spain look as they might freshly painted. All of the stones are carefully selected, shaped and weathered, and the art is made with the same techniques and pigments that paleolithic artists used. I have been creating and showing art throughout the bay area for over 30 years, and have been researching, and experimenting with cave art for the last 15 years.
